Jay Haide L'Ancienne Double Bass - available for purchase from our web shop!

Italian model illustrated, also available in German and French styles.

Unlike many instruments in this price range, all Jay Haide instruments are completely hand-made of quality seasoned maple and spruce and have a tone quality and workmanship normally found in those costing much more. The new Jay Haide à l’ancienne violins, violas, cellos and basses are brought to you after years of development with the collaboration of master European luthiers known for their fine varnish technique. The varnish is a new formulation, carefully applied and beautifully antiqued giving each instrument the patina of age, so desired by both musicians and connoisseurs. And, they are as beautiful tonally as they are visually. The Jay Haide à l’ancienne has been designed for the advanced student and professional who needs an instrument that will compliment and enhance their artistic style.

There are three (3) different models of Bass: French, German & Italian. Each model aims to reproduce features and nuances of original models of these instruments, with meticulous attention to scroll and f-hole carving, top and back archings, and wear-patterns of the varnish. The instruments have a remarkably mature, rich sound for their price range.

French – The model is a modern French (Quenoil) with sloping upper shoulders, a full-width lower bout and a well proportioned swell back.

Italian – The model is a Classic Italian (Panormo) with full upper and lower bouts and a fully carved back.

German – The model is a classic German with large upper and lower bours and a fully carved back.

From double bassist Harrison Wood – “My Jay Haide ‘Artistique a l’Ancienne’ double bass is a fully hand-carved solid wood bass with a graduated solid spruce top. It’s backs and sides are hand-made from high quality fully seasoned flamed maple. It has a wonderful quality of tone and the workmanship is amazing for the money. Haide collaborated with master European luthiers who are known for their beautifully antiqued fine varnish techniques and although my bass looks like an old nineteenth century bass, of course it isn’t (it was new). It’s both beautiful tonally and visually – harrisonwood.com
